Design Process

Anchor 2

Research and mapping carried out as a preliminary step in our design process or for the purpose of formulating an ideological position on a particular topic.

Throughout the design process, we make decisions deriving from data such as site properties and regulations, but there are decisions that are at our discretion. These decisions aim to impart cultural, social and atmospheric characteristics to the place we are designing, in accordance with our perception. we aspire to use a well defined design process. A design process that defines a connection between our initial points of interest in the project, to its final design gives a consistent leading line for the decisions we make.

Our intention is to create an empiric decision making process which will help us realize the desired characteristics in the design. This kind of process requires a consistent guideline for decision-making.

Mapping helps us formulate this guideline.

It is done by finding a personal, local or cultural reference that embodies the character we want to give to the project. The reference can be the local environment, an artwork, a text etc. In the mapping process we research the reference to collect the relevant information, interpret it as a hiererchical collection of data and mark it as a map, to be used as a planning tool throughout the various stages of work.

The process leads to a richer, more complex and meaningful design and establishes the connection between the initial interest in the project and its final result.
